How to get oil, grease & grime out of any fabric

🧈 To get oil, grease, or grime out of clothing, material, or fabric:

  1. Gently blot the excess oil with a clean paper towel—never rub.
  2. Spray Stain Stuff directly onto the stain until fully saturated.
  3. Let it sit for a few minutes to break down the grease—no need to rush.
  4. Work the stain remover in lightly with a soft-bristle brush.
  5. For washables (clothes & fabrics), rinse under cool water or leave it until laundry day. For furniture & carpets, dab repeatedly with a damp microfiber cloth until clear.

Avoid high dryer heat until you are sure the oil mark is completely gone.

You know that moment: you’re sitting down after dinner, or putting on your favourite top, and you notice a dark, shadowy circle sitting right on the chest.

Oil and grease are sneaky like that. Unlike red wine or coffee, they often look completely invisible while fabric is wet, only to show up as a stubborn, slick mark once the garment dries.

Whether it’s butter from movie popcorn, olive oil from cooking, collar grime, or grease from a bike chain - oil doesn’t mean your fabric is ruined. You just need a formula that breaks down oil without stripping your fabric's colour.

Here is how to handle grease based on where it lands in your home:

Scenario 1: The Kitchen Splash (Salad Dressings, Butter & Cooking Oils)

When cooking oil or butter hits your clothes, linen tablecloth, or cloth napkins, you don't need to run to the sink immediately.

  1. Press a paper towel directly onto the spot to absorb any extra surface oil. (No scrubbing—we don't want to spread the circle!)
  2. Spray Stain Stuff directly onto the mark until it's completely soaked. You’ll notice the dark oil spot starting to change appearance as the water-based formula binds to the grease—that's completely normal, it's just doing the hard work for you.
  3. Work it in gently with your soft-bristle brush, and then make your choice:
    • Option A: Throw it straight into the laundry basket and let laundry day handle the rest.
    • Option B: Give it a few minutes to sit, then rinse under cool tap water if you want to wear it right away.

Scenario 2: Tough Grime (Bike Chains, Collars & Cuff Marks)

Thicker grease and built-up body oils need a little extra time to loosen their grip on fabric threads.

  • Give it time to sit: Spray Stain Stuff generously onto the grime and let it sit for 10–20 minutes. There’s no rush—the longer it sits, the more time the formula has to break down heavy grease.
  • Light agitation: Gently brush the area with your soft-bristle brush in circular motions to work the formula deep into woven cuffs or heavy cotton.
  • Wash as normal: Toss it into your regular laundry cycle with cool water.

Scenario 3: Upholstery Drops (Couches, Cushions & Carpets)

When salad dressing or a greasy snack drops onto the sofa, you can't exactly toss your couch cushion into the washing machine!

  1. Blot up the liquid oil with a clean paper towel.
  2. Spray Stain Stuff directly onto the spot and let it sit for a few minutes—the longer the better.
  3. Use your soft-bristle brush to lightly work the formula into the carpet pile or cushion fabric.
  4. Dab it clean using a damp microfiber cloth. Press firmly to absorb the dissolved grease, rinsing your cloth with cool water as you go. Let it air dry naturally!

Why Skip the Dish Soap "Hack"?

A lot of internet tips tell you to pour harsh liquid dish soap straight onto clothing. While dish soap cuts grease, it's made for dishes—not delicate garment dyes. It can easily leave behind soapy rings, fade bright colours, or leave a film on natural fibres like cotton and linen.

Using a dedicated, stain remover means you get rid of the oil mark while keeping your fabric feeling soft and looking brand new.

Quick Tip for Set-In Oil Marks

Did an oil stain accidentally slip through the wash and dryer? Don't worry! Old, baked-in oil marks just need a longer soak. Spray Stain Stuff on the dry spot, let it sit for 20 minutes, work it with your soft brush, and wash it again.

Real-life messes happen, but keeping your home and favourite clothes looking great shouldn't feel like a chore. Keep a bottle of Stain Stuff and a soft-bristle brush nearby so you're always ready!

With love and stains,
From our home to yours!
